National Probation Service

As part of the Government’s Transforming Rehabilitation Programme, a National Probation Service has been established. This new body has taken on some of the work previously carried out by probation trusts.

The following services are provided by the National Probation Service:

  • Preparation of all court reports and parole reports
  • Initial assessments to determine which provider will manage a case
  • Manage offenders who are MAPPA registered, who pose a high risk of serious harm
  • Carry out victim support work
  • Manage Approved Premises
  • Decide on action in relation to all potential breaches beyond first warning and advise the courts or Secretary of State on sanctions or recall to custody
  • Consult on changes in risk of harm
