Charity Lock In - A Night in the Cells

Mike Maiden, the Cumbria Chief Officer was recently locked up in Police cells for the night!

Monday 13th November 2006 saw Cumbria Probation Area's Chief Officer Mike Maiden spending the night behind bars in Carlisle's new custody complex at Durranhill. The reason behind this was not for the usual commiting of an offence - but in aid of Great North Air Ambulance. Staff from across the Area paid to see their Chief Officer locked up for the night, going through the same procedures as what anyone remanded in custody would do.

Along with Mike, the first occupants of the new cells were the High Sheriff, a Crown Court Judge, the Chief Crown Prosecutor, the Chief Executive of Her Majesty's Court Service, the Head of the Youth Offending Service, the Governor of Haverigg Prison and, our host, the Deputy Chief Constable.

Mike confessed that he took along a sleeping bag - which came in useful as he describes the mattress as rested on a cold slab which made comfort impossible. With the absence of anything to dampen the noise, the slam of the cell door echoed through the corridor sending a chill down the spine of those behind it.

Mike raised �329 for the Great North Air Ambulance. Money was also raised for the High Sheriff's Charity with the amount donated to be confirmed soon.
