Our Role Within the Prisons

Cumbria Probation Trust works closely with HMP Haverigg in the management of those offenders with a custodial sentence.

The offender is allocated a community based offender manager at the start of their sentence who will be in contact with them during their time in custody, either by visit or letter.

There is also an offender management team based within the prison to address offending behaviour from the commencement of their prison sentence.

Any decisions regarding the early release of a prisoner are determined with the help of reports that are completed by the offender manager that is based within the prison and moreover in the community.  These include details on risk to the public and whether or not to impose any conditions e.g. completion of programmes, or for the offender to stay away from specific individuals.  It is the aim that the work started in custody to address the offending behaviour is then continued as necessary upon the offender’s release in order that offending is reduced.  Cumbria Probation Trust staff sit on boards with the prison governors to make these decisions.

At this stage, prior to an offender’s release, their community based offender manager will meet with them to discuss release conditions, accommodation and employment needs.  This is to ensure that all arrangements are in place to allow the offender to be able to comply with the conditions on their licence upon their release, as well as to reduce any risk of harm or re-offending.
