Liz Calderbank, Assistant Chief Inspector of Probation, said:
"This inspection of offender management work in Cumbria took place as part of our second programme of Offender Management Inspections. We have examined a representative sample of probation (adult offending ) cases from the Trust, and have judged how often the work with each case was done to a sufficiently high level of quality.
We found that the organisation had been effectively led through a period with a number of major challenges, including structural and financial changes. The Trust had prioritised improving the quality of the services it offered and ensuring local services met local needs. Work with partners helped to ensure a relevant range of services were available to support the delivery of offender management. There were many elements of practice that were being undertaken to a good standard. However, some practice issues needed further attention.
Overall, we consider this to be an encouraging set of findings and take the view that Cumbria Probation Trust is well placed to address the challenges it will face in the forseeable future."
Cumbria Probation Trust's Chief Executive, Annette Hennessy is very pleased with the findings of the Inspection Report, saying "these evidence the consistent high quality work undertaken in managing offenders in the community in Cumbria. Probation staff in Cumbria are dedicated and hardworking and the excellent results in the Inspection Report are well deserved."
