Cumbria Reducing Offending PartnershipThe Cumbria Reducing Offending Partnership (CROP) is a group of representatives of a wider range of organisations interested in doing something to address the problems that can lead to crime. Offenders have broken the law and deserved to be punished but they often also face very serious disadvantages. Did you know, for example, that about 70% of the people sentenced to prison suffer from mental disorders? Or that a third were not living in settled accommodation prior to going to prison? A high proportion has difficulty with basic skills like literacy and numeracy with over half reading below the level of an 11 year old. CROP came about through concerned representatives of the Probation, Youth Offending and Prison Services talking to others from the churches and the voluntary sector. We quickly found that we shared a commitment to do something about the social exclusion of offenders and have been developing ideas and projects for which we will seek funding. The Probation Service facilitates the group but it is very much what its members make it. If you are a member of the voluntary sector, a local church or other faith group and you want to know more then you can contact us by emailing hq@cumbriaprobation.gsi.gov.uk.
